Between 2003 and 2007, prior to the financial crisis, economic growth in Brazil averaged 5% a year — its best performance in more than 25 years.

CCT Media Release – Millions of rands lost in repairs in informal settlements

Over the past year, the City of Cape Town spent more than R80 million on repairing or replacing stolen or vandalised basic services in informal settlements.

“For every R3 that the City spends of its R125 million annual budget for water and sanitation facilities in informal settlements, R2 is spent on repairs and replacements,” says Alderman Clive Justus, Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services.

News article: N2 Gateway builders ‘bankrupt’

National government housing agency Thubelisha Homes never had a mandate from the cabinet to manage the N2 Gateway housing project.

This was why Thubelisha “got into financial difficulties”, said the company’s chief operations officer, Mano Pillay, on Tuesday at Parliament’s human settlements’ portfolio committee. (more…)
